I’ve been talking about relationships A LOT lately…and for good reason! Every day I keep getting affirming messages that I am thinking about thought worthy things! As I said yesterday, God is a member of the first relationship! And He is also a member of the relationship with mankind…”Man” that he made in His image. I discovered some fascinating things last week at our small group while watching a video series by Andrew Wommack titled “God’s Kind of Marriage.” This is the gist… (with A LOT of my own commentary…let’s just say Mr. Wommack is VERY conservative and fundamentalist/literal in his thinking…me, not so much.)
Man was not sad or lonely or pathetic…he wasn’t moping around the Garden of Eden feeling sorry for himself. Man did not call out to God in desperation. Man did not ask for anything…he did not know what he was missing. The man was content…happily living in communion with God and in the paradise world that God had created. It was God who in Genesis 2:18 decided that man needed someone to share the world with. “The Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make him a helper suitable for him.” God brought all of the beasts of the field and birds of the air to be named by man and to see if there would be a suitable helper among the animals already created…”But for Adam no suitable helper was found.” Genesis 2:20b.
Genesis 2:21- 25 “So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, ‘ This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh;she shall be called “woman,” for she was taken out of man.’ That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.”
Whether Adam prophesied about how things were to be, or whether the words came from Moses about how things were as he wrote the account is secondary to the importance that they were made by God to be One seen by God as One. I am also not going to get wrapped up in a scientific discussion of the possibility or impossibility of how a woman can be made from a rib. Whether it is an allegory to show that they are created from the same material or whether it is literal is not for me to say. All I can answer to nay sayers is this…Have you looked at a baby lately? Or an ocean? Or the mountains? Or the Grand Canyon? or a Sequoyah tree? Or a daisy? Or the night sky? or the amazing capacity for knowledge that a toddler has? or through a microscope or a telescope? Do you really want to get hung up that?!!??
God’s male and female creations were not “one” simply because they came together for the sake of procreation or to share a connection as husband and wife…they were ONE literally because that is the way that they were seen by God! And why not? God is a Father, a Son and a Holy Spirit…three in One. Why not male, female and God…three in One. It makes perfect symmetrical sense to me!…at least in a perfect world…and it was perfect…for a little while.
God did not give this new creation, the female made for Adam, a name…Adam did. God called them both “Adam”…God called them both ‘man’. They shared the same genetic makeup with a twist! The female was not “a little bit like” Adam. God looked at them as one being. They were made to live in agreement and in harmony and in a close relationship with one another and with God. Genesis 5:1-2 “This is the written account of Adam’s family line. When God created man, he made them in the likeness of God.He created them male and female and blessed them. And when they were created, he named them ‘man’.
Isn’t that absolutely fascinating? I am amazed at all that I still have to learn and all that there is to think about! And I am just starting at the beginning!!! In Genesis. Wow, I’ve got a long way to go…and that is exciting to me!
But, moving right along… we all know how the story goes, “Adam/ Man” did not get to stay in paradise unashamed forever. It did not continue to be a perfect world.
Just like the devil STILL does today…the devil knew that the way to destroy union between people and their relationships was to divide and conquer. That is why the devil did not approach Adam and Eve when they were together. As I heard someone say recently, the devil is a master sales person. He will be very convincing about what you need, or what you are missing out on…he will sale you a bill of goods. and once you buy, or enter into his trap, then he will tell you how stupid you are and how ashamed you should be and that what you have done is so terrible that there is no way that God will ever want you again… he will try to condemn you. But the devil has no power to condemn you! Everything he says is a lie to make us feel unworthy to be in communion with God. When we are together and in communion with God the devil cannot get to us! And he knows that! Remember the verse I keep quoting from Ecclesiastes about the cord with three stands being unbreakable?? The devil may succeed at times, we may choose poorly and find ourselves separated from what God wants for us BUT ALL WE HAVE TO DO is acknowledge that we made a mistake, ask forgiveness and sincerely try not to ever make the same mistake again. We are not condemned no matter what the devil might try to convince us of because we are God’s child! We are not made for darkness and shame. We are made for light and life.
God wants us to have relationships that include Him and that are with Him. If we feel separated it is because we have believed the devil’s lies that we are not good enough or pure enough or nice enough. Guess what? NOBODY is…but God doesn’t care about our past AT ALL. To Him EVERYTHING can be forgiven and forgotten and everything start brand new from this moment on. All we have to do is have a little chat with Him that goes something like this: “Lord, if I have hurt someone, please forgive me. If someone has hurt me help me to forgive. If I have hurt You, I am SOO sorry. Help me forgive myself…that is the hardest part, but I have to, so help me. The devil has NO POWER over me…or any claim to me. He is NOT my shepherd and I DO NOT hear or acknowledge his voice. Hear me, Lord and help me hear Your voice. I want a relationship with You, and I know You have been waiting on me to come back to You. Here I am. Thank You for meeting me right where I am…right now this second. I accept my position as Your child. Thank You for always welcoming me home with open arms. Take away my worries and my fears and my shame. Give me strength. Give me Your peace. Amen.”
