That is the perfect quote for my day and weekend. I have SOOOOO many things that need to be DONE… but they will not get accomplish by my wishing. I am going to have to literally roll up my sleeves and GET BUSY.
I am tired of looking at the same things that need attention day after day. I am tired of saying “That really needs to be done…but it isn’t terribly high on my “to do” priority list…and it will take too much time …and if I start it I don’t know if I will be able to finish it.” Well, it is pretty darn CERTAIN that if I don’t start it, then indeed it won’t get finished. So, today is the day. Look out because I am in a tackling mood!
I haven’t started my tasks yet, not because I am a terrible procrastinater or easily distracted (which I am…for both) …I haven’t started “working” because I am taking seriously my promise I made to myself to try to write each day.. For me, keeping a promise is important…if I follow through with things then I feel like a ….you guessed it…a “success”. And the work I need to do also illustrates my topic this week. For me to feel like a success, I also have to literally “check things off” my list. I have to SEE the fruits of my labor.
For me success is making a difference. It may be something trivial like making a bed, or blowing leaves off of the driveway, or mowing the grass, or folding and putting away laundry, or going to the grocery store and filling up the pantry and fridge in a way that will be appealing to my family, or taking my kids to the places that they need to go, or cleaning out my many litter boxes, or taking my dog out, or paying bills …or it may be BIG things like studying for a professional license, or teaching Sunday school or teaching Preschool or planning a new career, or saving money and planning a family trip where the memories will last a life-time. I am not qualified to prescribe an antibiotic or to take an x-ray…but when my children are sick or hurt I am the first level of triage…and I can usually nurse them back to health. To me, that is success. I am not qualified to teach courses in math or science or reading but I can support and encourage my children in their learning. I don’t have a counseling degree or a seminary degree, but I have lived a life where I can listen and understand and offer loving and compassionate suggestions. I am not a law-maker, or a judge or a person with power…but I have a voice and I have the right to use it to speak for others whose voice is too small to hear. I may not be “special” or extra-ordinary in any way at all, but I can still make a difference. I may not be a “success” in the typical sense, but if I succeed in making a difference to improve the life or experience of anyone then I am content.
Albert Einstein said, “Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value.”
Last night I shared a quote on my Facebook page:
WORK FOR A CAUSE, NOT FOR APPLAUSE. LIVE LIFE TO EXPRESS, NOT TO IMPRESS. DON’T STRIVE TO MAKE YOUR PRESENCE NOTICED, JUST MAKE YOUR ABSENCE FELT. ~UNKNOWN
I have been asking this week for you to consider what motivates you…what you believe it means to be a success…what needs to happen to stop spinning your wheels in the sand, get some traction and start moving…moving with a CLEAR and INTENTIONAL GOAL for what you want your life from this moment forward to look like. There may be barriers that look like they are too ginormous to overcome, but the saying, “Where there is a WILL there is a WAY!” Is NOT just a cliché. If you cannot see how to make your dreams become realities then start small and build and build.
“My dreams are worthless, my plans are dust, my goals are impossible. All are of no value unless they are followed by action. I will act now. Never has there been a map, however carefully executed to detail and scale, which carried its owner over even one inch of ground…Action is the food and drink which nourish my success.
“Henceforth, I will remember the lesson of the firefly who gives of its light only when it is on the wing, only when it is in action. I will become a firefly and even in the day my glow will be seen in spite of the sun. Let others be as butterflies who preen their wings…I will be as the firefly and my light will brighten the world.” Og Mandino
That is what I want to do. That’s all 🙂 Just “brighten the world.”
My closing thoughts for today will reflect on the wisdom of the following three quotes:
“A successful man is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks that others have thrown at him. “~ David Brinkley
“I honestly think it is better to be a failure at something you love than to be a success at something you hate.” George Burns
“Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm. “Winston Churchill
Begin laying your foundation for the life you WANT to have. Do not be discouraged by obstacles or nay-sayers who tell you that “You can’t” or that your dreams are not practical or realistic? WHO SAYS? Your DREAMS are for YOU…they don’t have to be practical or realistic for someone else!
Are we succeeding if we are miserable? I would rather live in a shack and eat beans than to live my life doing something I hate.
I love this last one… never lose your enthusiasm. We aren’t always lucky the first time around. Something might have seem like a fine idea at the time and turned out to be in reality nothing like we thought it was going to be. Do we HAVE TO stay where we are just because that is where we are? I know too many people who believe that they “have made their bed and now they have to lie in it.” That is not noble. That is stupid. THINK ABOUT IT. What are you doing if you are wollering around in your miserable bed? What good are you doing yourself or anybody else. Get up! Take off those wrinkled-up clothes, pull yourself together and START! Right now! “Runners, take your mark. Get set. Go!”
And at the end of it all, I hope you are able to say with no regrets, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7
If you can say that, then at least in my book, you are a success, Indeed. Peace.
